Why 2 Weeks Isn’t the Only Time for Newborn Portraits

Many parents believe newborn photos have to happen in the first two weeks. And when life feels overwhelming, it can feel like you’ve missed your chance.
But you haven’t.
In fact, some of the most meaningful newborn portraits happen a little later.

This beautiful family came to the studio when their baby boy was 8 weeks old. Life had been full after he arrived. With two busy six-year-old twin sisters, a new baby, and all of the emotions and adjustment that come with welcoming another child, Mom simply needed more time.
And that is exactly why I love photographing older newborns.
At 5–10 weeks, babies are still tiny and brand new, but they are often more awake, expressive, and connected. Instead of spending most of the session asleep and swaddled, this sweet little boy gave us calm, serene awake portraits, soft eye contact, and the sweetest expressions.

Because he was more alert, we were able to create beautiful images not only of him on his own, but also with the people who love him most.
His twin sisters were old enough to be wonderfully engaged with their new baby brother. They cuddled close, looked at him with pride, and we even captured a special portrait of just the two of them together. Those sibling connections are often even easier to photograph a few weeks in, when everyone has had time to settle into their new roles.

An older newborn session is often quicker and easier than a traditional newborn session, too. There is less waiting for baby to fall asleep, and siblings stay happier and more engaged.
All of these moments were captured in my simple white studio, where the focus stays exactly where it belongs: on your baby, your family, and your connection.

Because two weeks isn’t the only time for newborn photos. Sometimes, waiting is exactly what makes them even more meaningful.
